Jerusalem - Jewish Quarter

The Jewish Quarter in the Old City

Hurva Synagogue, Jewish Quarter, Old City Jerusalem Israel

There are 3 Jerusalem tours:

  1. Three Religions - The Western Wall, Temple Mount, and Church of the Holy Sepulchre
  2. Beginnings - the City of David, the Davidson Archaeological Center, and the Machane Yehuda Marketplace
  3. The Jewish Quarter of the Old City - this page

On this tour of Jerusalem, we'll focus on the different sites of the Jewish Quarter, in the old city of Jerusalem. It might be just 1 out of 4 quarters, but there's plenty to be seen!

We'll start off taking a look at a map of the old city, to understand what we're actually talking about when we talk about the different quarters.

Once we've got the intro stuff out of the way, we'll get going. Our first stop is King David's Tomb on Mount Zion. We'll stop at the Zion gate, and talk about the different wars of Israel, from the Independence War through the Yom Kippur War, and how they changed life here in the Jewish Quarter.

We'll see the Hurva Synagogue and talk about its strange name and significance, and we'll see remains of the Cardo, the main street 2000 years ago, and see what life was like when it was a hustling and bustling city.

And there are even remains from a wall that surrounded the Old City over 2500 years ago that are visible in the Jewish Quarter, and we'll talk about what made this wall necessary, why it was built specifically here, and what makes it so unique.

Of course, no tour of the Jewish Quarter is complete without wrapping up at the Western Wall with a very brief explanation (full detailed explanation in the Jerusalem - 3 Religions tour)
